A song written especially for this year's Pride March has been launched ahead of the 15th annual community event.
Titled Proudly Walking the song was commissioned by Pride March Victoria, and written and produced by Will Conyers and David Peake. The lyrics were drawn from submissions by the GLBTi community of Victoria and is a fundraiser for the organisation.
The genesis of this project was some 9 months ago when Brett Hayhoe - President of Pride March Victoria discussed the idea of a Pride March song with Will Conyers.
After Conyers offered his services to write and produce it, he suggested to Hayhoe that Pride March Victoria should canvas the gay community for 'their' thoughts on what Pride March meant to them in '25 words or less'.
A hugely encouraging response from a request on Pride March’s Face Book page ensued and the words or sentiments of ALL those contributions found their way into the lyrics.
“This is a first for our organisation and in fact for any Pride around this country (and I would hasten to add around the world)", said Pride March President, Brett Hayhoe.
"What we as a community have traditionally done is to adopt a commercial song (from Kylie, Madonna or the like). Not being totally happy with this I wanted something that was specifically about Pride and what it meant to our community."
Hayhoe has assured the community this IS an original song for Pride March Victoria... an original song called Proudly Walking. The song was launched last week on Australia’s first Gay & Lesbian Radio station, JOY 94.9
The CD will be available to purchase at this year’s annual Pride March, which takes place this Sunday 7 March commening at 2.00pm
